How do I use IT to help my business?

For IT to add value (rather than just cost) it must match the strategy of the business. If you try to implement an IT system without a clear view of the business strategy then you are asking for trouble in years to come. You need to:

  1. Evaluate where your business is
  2. Plan where it needs to be and how to get there, and only then can you consider how you...
  3. Implement your solution.

If you go through the first two stages the decisions for implementation will become clearer. You will know whether your goal is to minimise your short term costs, minimise your operating costs, enhance your business capability - or just retain the maximum flexibility to deal with a turbulent market. These factors are often not complementary, but you must choose a compromise that meets your business goals.
